Details: A 20 year old Georgia woman lost her life in a single car MVC on I-95 near the 41 mile marker northbound. The accident was reported at 09:12 Friday morning 10-January after the 2004 Ford Explorer drove off of the median side of the highway, over-corrected and lost control. The small SUV then crossed over both northbound lanes, before spinning backwards and striking several trees at the wood line. The vehicle received heavy damage and trapped the driver. A 21 year old male who was sleeping in the car and a 1 year old male who was secured in a child seat, were not injured. The driver’s side took the brunt of the impact. A Hampton County Deputy who was also traveling northbound, witnessed the accident and immediately reported it over the radio. Colleton Fire-Rescue units from the new Jonesville station arrived within minutes and found the patient unconscious in the SUV, in critical condition. A medical helicopter was requested. Holmatro Rescue Tools from Engine 13 were used to remove the driver’s door and extricate the patient. She was immobilized and placed in Medic 13. LifeNet 4 landed on the Interstate approximately ¼ north of the accident scene and prepared to fly the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC, but the patient went into cardiac arrest. Medic 13, with the flight crew onboard, then rapidly transported the patient to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. The patient was revived, but passed away several hours later at the ED. Traffic on I-95 northbound in the area of the accident was blocked for about 25 minutes while the SC Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
