GREENVILLE, S.C. –One home is a total loss and the other is badly damaged after a fire near downtown Greenville.
Everyone made it out safely, although one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
It happened on West Earle Street, off Stone Avenue and North Main Street.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Greenville City Fire Inspector Tito Dendy said investigators want to know more about what was going was before the fire started.
Dendy said investigators believe the fire started on the front right side of a home where three renters and their dogs lived just before 7 a.m. on Friday.
Then it spread quickly to the home next door.
“I can’t get that picture out of my head of what it looked like,” said neighbor Maria Gomes. “The smoke, it was so bad. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Gomes said she saw the flames, ran to her neighbor’s home and banged on the door, hoping to wake up the grandmother and her two young grandchildren inside.
“She grabbed them and came out with whatever she had,” said Gomes.
